Free Form Knitting with Amy Montevaldo

Have you ever wanted to:

Find a way to create with leftover yarn you already love? Play with color and texture in your knitting? Be adventurous and try knitting without a true pattern?

Explore your creativity and using your stash in new ways with multi-yarn knitting as part of this year’s Yarno series!

Free-from, multi-yarn knitting is a great way to use up small amounts of leftover yarns, or that one funky skein you bought at Yarn Crawl and aren’t quite sure what to do with. The idea is to flow, making color and design decisions based on your emerging piece, not necessarily being bound by a specific pattern. (Don’t worry, a rough ‘pattern’ outline/guide will be provided; using it is optional!)

Requirements:

Foundation yarn:
A skein of variegated/multi-colored yarn with a short to medium color repeat; worsted weight is ideal.

Accent yarns:
At least 10 different yarns that play well with your lead yarn and/or each other. You want as many variegated yarns as possible, along with a mix of semi-solid, tonal, speckles and mohair. Any amount, weight, and fiber content is fine. ‘Novelty’ and/or textured yarns are encouraged but not necessary. Be sure to add a color pop!

Needles:
6.5-9mm/US10.5-13 medium to long circulars if using worsted weight. Bring a whole set if you have one.

Gauge:
Not especially crucial.

Pattern:
Templates for simple scarf options will be provided. Using them is optional.

The goal is to create without a specific pattern and to simply let the inspiration flow, looking at your emerging piece to make color and design decisions.

Instructor: Amy Montevaldo
Instructor Bio: My name is Amy, and I have a weakness for yarn that’s unusual or unique which feeds into my love of color, texture, sparkle and shine! When the yarn has interesting color, textural quality; or gives the look or effect I want, the pedigree doesn't matter! I am a lazy knitter; I just want to knit and create and play with colors, and not get too caught up in stitch counts or garment fit or gauge swatches. I had an “aha” moment when I stumbled across free-form, multi-yarn knitting. This may have enabled my eclectic and haphazard yarn buying habits, but made for leftovers upon completing a project. What to do? Put those leftovers together and make something else! Since I’d always wanted to try dyeing yarn, I hit upon the idea of dyeing unusual or textured yarns in small quantities, perfect for free-form, multi-fiber artists, and Peekaboo Yarns was born! The joy of working with color wends its way through most of what I do, and spills over from one artistic rabbit-hole to another. I love the transformative process of how colors combine and change with other elements as well as each other, be it through felting, knitting, or the endless possibilities when tinkering at the dye pots.
