YARNIVAL Color Theory for Weavers

Learn how color theory is different in weaving than knitting or crochet.  Yoriko Oki is a yarn dyer with an amazing sense of color!  She will walk you through basic color theory and then talk about how all of that can change when weaving.  This is a two part class.

The class is on Zoom and will be recorded and available for 30 days after the last class.

A Kit of Yoriko's Yarns is highly recommended.  Click here to purchase.

Pre-workshop homework

Warp your loom before the class according to the instructions below. Please use good warp separator (I prefer wallpaper) for even tension. Select 3-5 colours of yarn in fingering weight (for rigid heddle loom), or 8/2 or 5/2 cotton (for shaft loom) for warp. Include at least one each of light colour, medium colour, and dark colour. They could be from the same hue (colour family), such as blue. In that case, you could use baby blue, royal blue, and navy for your warp. The goal of the workshop is to weave your warp with various colours to understand how colours interact with each other in weaving. So, you are not aiming to design a beautiful warp, but use those colours in wide stripes. I recommend using your favourite colours for warp.

Using the colours of your choice in wide stripes (one stripe per colour), warp your loom using 10-dpi or 12-dpi reed (if you are using fingering weight yarn), 20 dpi (if you are using 8/2 cotton), or 15 or 16 dpi (if you are using 5/2 cotton). Each stripe should be about 2 inch wide. Recommended warp length is 1 to 2 yards, depending how fast you weave, and how much more sampling you are willing to do after the class. I have kits of small amount of sock yarn or 8/2 unmercerized cotton in 20+ colours. The kits contain various colors around the color wheel for you to try. If you have yarn you want to use as weft, please bring them to the class. If you are using a shaft loom, please thread the heddles in a straight twill fashion (1234, 1234…).

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: You must be able to warp your loom.
Requirements: A kit is highly recommended for the class.
Instructor: Yoriko Oki
Instructor Bio: Hi, my name is Yoriko Oki. I am originally from Japan and have been living in Canada since mid 90s. I am a dyer, weaver, knitter, and overall fibre art enthusiast. My mission is to inspire, liberate, and empower my fellow fibre artists through my work so that they can keep enjoying the crafts they love. I admit that I am a slow learner. Although I enjoyed working with yarn and fibre since I was small and grew up surrounded by rich history of textile, my path to get where I am now was not straightforward. I was originally trained and practiced as an architect in Japan where I hit a glass ceiling early in my career. I moved to Canada and earned master?s degree in architecture from University of British Columbia. After finishing my master?s program, I worked as a freelance translator specializing in IT and building engineering. In 1999, I graduated from Helen Lefeaux School of Fashion Design with honor, where I rediscovered my love of textiles. In 2004, I joined Fibre Art Studio On Granville Island ? a shared textile studio/gallery shop in Vancouver. I started dyeing yarns for my own weaving projects and started offering them to other fibre art lovers as my yarns soon caught their eyes. In 2014, after my husband suddenly became critically ill, I thought about the meaning of my life and decided to make my fibre art business as my fulltime job. I opened an online shop on Etsy in 2016 offering hand dyed yarn. In 2019, I participated in Vogue Knitting Live Launch Pad program ? small business accelerator program for fibre art businesses ? which lead to many other opportunities. I always describe myself as a ?forever work in progress.? I am looking forward to finding out what unrolls in front of my eyes next!
