YARNIVAL Intro to Two Pass Woven Knitting

All YARNIVAL Classes are taught via Zoom, are recorded, and paying students have access to the recording for 30 days after the class.
Class Description:
Woven Knitting is an innovative knitting technique that uses slipped stitches to replicate woven fabric. Mary will be joining us to teach Two Pass Woven Knitting. Mary’s Woven Knitting techniques separate the colourwork from the cabling aspects of the fabric. This allows you to create many different colourwork motifs while following the same cabling instructions. It feels like magic when the design emerges! You will learn the theory that makes this possible.
Two Pass Woven Knitting requires two rows/rounds of knitting to work all the design elements on the needles. The class project is a small swatch in the round. The homework will familiarize you with the cable motif in one colour. In class we will add colour to the swatch and work two different motifs at the same time!
Materials Required for Class:
- Completed Homework
- Yarn: 2 colours of worsted weight yarn -- 50 yds/ 45 m each. Solid colour with good contrast recommended.
- Needles: 5 mm/ US #8 circular needles for small circumference knitting (magic loop, travelling loop and two circular methods work well; DPNs not recommended)
- 2 stitch markers
- 4 colouring pencils/markers (it may be helpful for 2 of the colours to match your yarn colours)
Note: I will use light grey as my main colour (MC) and dark blue as my contrast colour (CC). Optional: You may find it helpful to follow along using similar colours or by using a dark/a light coloured yarn.

Instructor: | Mary Martin |
Instructor Bio: | Mary Martin is a knitwear designer based in Toronto, Canada, creating innovative fabrics. She has pioneered two reversible techniques: Fission Knitting and Fusion Knitting and is most recently developed Woven Knitting. She draws on her engineering background as she “builds” her fabric. Her computer experience was applied to creating flexible knitting notation to describe her unique use of cables. When Mary designs it feels surprisingly like her work building financial structures on Wall Street. Mary started designing when she was knitting chemo caps for a friend with breast cancer. She wanted to make a reversible hat for her friend but was unable to. This sparked her curiosity about whether it was possible to place cabled motifs on both sides of the fabric. Her designs reflect what she has learned about creating reversible fabrics. |
