YARNIVAL 3 Ways to Ply with a Drop Spindle

All YARNIVAL Classes are taught via Zoom, are recorded, and registered students have access to the recording for 30 days.
Class Description:
This class will cover the techniques involved in creating 2 ply, 3 ply, and Navajo/chain ply yarns using a top or bottom whorl drop spindle.
We will briefly touch on the differences when using a Turkish spindle (ie. how to ply from the cop/turtle), but we will not specifically focus on Turkish spindles.
We will go over the how-to's and then you will have time to practice each technique during the class.
Homework and Class Materials:
Students should arrive to class with a minimum of 3 pre-spun singles that are at least 1/2 ounce each (6, 1/4 ounce, singles would be ideal), but more yardage per spun single is better. In the world of drop spindles, the more the merrier. All singles need to be spun in the same direction. The singles can be on multiple drop spindles, wound onto dowels, bobbins, toilet paper/paper towel tubes, pencils. Knitting needles, etc. If you do not have a drop spindle "lazy kate" for plying you should bring a shoebox or other appropriately sized box to contain your singles while plying.
Skill Level: | Intermediate |
Skill Details: | Students are expected to have the ability to spin relatively consistent, sport weight or lighter, singles on a drop spindle. |
Instructor: | Shannon Page |
Instructor Bio: | My name is Shannon Page and I have been an avid spinner for the past 12 years. Drop spindles, traditional spinning wheels, and e-spinners are platforms that I'm comfortable with and enjoy spinning on. I started teaching spinning classes at my local yarn store 4 years ago and my favorite class to teach is a beginner drop spindle class. When I’m not spinning, I work as a sign language interpreter, professionally. My hobbies include various fiber arts and I am a crafter at heart. My most recently explored rabbit hole is rock tumbling. Originally hailing from NW Wisconsin, I have lived in central Florida for almost 20 years and I met my boyfriend at our local yarn store. Our origin story is so cute it will make you puke! |
