Design your own Tartan: Weaving with Peggy
Tartan plaids were the first “gang colors”. Originating in the Scottish highlands, they identified the group a person belonged to. In 1746, the wearing of tartans was banned, and persons caught wearing them could be imprisoned for 6 months. Today tartans are very popular and commonly worn in many cultures around the world. They are still used to identify family groups and organizations. The State of California has a registered tartan, as does the University of California – Riverside, IBM, and Hello Kitty.
Using two to five solid colors of fingering weight yarn, you will design and begin weaving a tartan scarf. The weave structure will be tabby.
