YARNIVAL: Conquering Many forms of Kitchener Stitch with Ann Budd on Zoom

We are so excited to have Ann Budd teaching for us again!  You will never have to look up Kitchener Stitch again!

Conquering Many Forms of Kitchener Stitch

Are you intimidated by the Kitchener stitch? Meet it head on with Ann Budd and overcome your fears of this too-often dreaded stitch, whether it’s used on stockinette stitch, reverse stockinette stitch, garter stitch, ribbing, or even the tubular bind-off. In this one-hour seminar, Ann will demystify the mechanics of this excellent finishing stitch and present a simple way to remember the sequence of steps that produce a perfect finish for toes of socks, tips of mittens, hems of hats and sweaters, and a “seamless” way to join two sets of live stitches.

An illustrated handout of the various techniques will be provided.

If you’d like to practice the techniques demonstrated, you’ll need worsted-weight yarn, size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) knitting needles, tapestry needle, and seven homework swatches.

Kitchener Stitch Swatch Instructions

You will need worsted-weight yarn, size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) needles, and 7 stitch holders.

Knit a total of seven (7) swatches as described below.

Knit two (2) swatches in stockinette stitch: Cast on 12 stitches and work in stockinette stitch (knit right-side rows; purl wrong-side rows) until piece measures about 2” (5 cm) ending with a wrong-side (purl) row. Cut yarn, leaving a 24” (60 cm) tail, unless you plan to use contrasting yarn for the bind-off, in which case, leave just a 6” (15 cm) tail. Place stitches on a holder.

Knit two (2) swatches in garter stitch: Cast on 12 stitches and work in garter stitch (knit every row) until piece measures about 2” (5 cm). Cut yarn, leaving a 24” (60 cm) tail, unless you plan to use contrasting yarn for the bind-off, in which case, leave just a 6” (15 cm) tail. Place stitches on a holder.

Knit three (3) swatches in k1, p1 ribbing: Cast on 12 stitches and work in k1, p1 ribbing (be sure to start each row with k1) until piece measures about 2” (5 cm). Cut yarn, leaving a 24” (60 cm) tail, unless you plan to use contrasting yarn for the bind-off, in which case, leave just a 6” (15 cm) tail. Place stitches on a holder.

Bring swatches, knitting needles, tapestry needle, and contrasting yarn (if desired) to class.
