My husband and I were in Italy this summer (celebrating my surviving breast cancer) and I found a machine knit scarf that I thought was so lovely! And this is a total knock off… It is a very simple and a highly wearable scarf - luxuriously long and wrap-able. It is just stockinette stitch with dropped stitches worked in both knit and purl. I chose Milo - one of my all time favorite yarns! Milo is a blend of wool and linen and for So Cal it is the perfect winter yarn and for the rest of the country this would make a great spring or summer wrap.
If you do not want to make the shawl as big you can very easily adjust the patter - either by eliminating repeats or decreases rows between the drop stitches. So you could make a very nice scarf out of 2 skeins of the mc and 1 of the cc.
